Is it really bed bugs?

Check before you pay anyone. These are the signs the NHS lists, and the usual lookalikes.

Signs of bed bugs

  • Small, itchy bites, often in a line or cluster on skin that was uncovered in bed.
  • Tiny blood spots on the sheets or pillowcase.
  • Dark brown or black spots along the mattress seams, the bed frame or the headboard.
  • Flat, brown, apple-pip sized insects in the seams and joints of the bed.
  • Pale, pinhead-sized eggs or empty skins in the same places.

Probably something else

  • Bites on ankles and lower legs only, with pets in the house: think fleas.
  • Tiny jumping insects on the carpet or the dog: fleas again.
  • Small furry larvae near skirting or under rugs: carpet beetles.

Signs from NHS: bedbugs. For bites that get hot, puffy or infected, a pharmacist or GP can help.

What should I do tonight?

This holds the line until a professional gets there. It will not finish the job by itself.

  1. Strip the bed. Sheets, duvet cover and pyjamas go on a 60°C wash, and into the tumble dryer on its hottest setting for at least 30 minutes.

  2. Anything that will not go in the machine goes into a tied bin bag that stays in the bedroom.

  3. Hoover the edges of the mattress, the frame and the skirting, and tip what you collect straight into the outside bin, bagged.

  4. Keep sleeping in your own bed. Moving to the sofa or the spare room takes them with you.

  5. Leave shop-bought sprays and foggers alone. They scatter the bugs and make the job longer.

Sheffield Bed Bug Treatment is a free matching service, not a pest control company. You get a firm's name first, and you choose whether to go ahead. How it works

Questions people in Sheffield ask

How much does bed bug treatment cost in Sheffield?

For a two-bed home, expect about £320 to £650 for a course of spray visits or £900 to £1,400 for heat, from national price guides. Sheffield City Council charges £362 for a standard three-bedroom semi. The price checker works out a range for your home.

Does Sheffield City Council get rid of bed bugs?

Yes. Its published charge for bed bugs is £362 including VAT, per treatment for a standard three-bedroom semi, or £106 if you get housing benefit, income support, income-based jobseeker's allowance, pension credit or income-related ESA. Further visits are £58 each, and you pay when you book. Council tenants should contact their local Housing Office first. Council pest control page.

Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?

Rarely. The NHS puts it plainly: home efforts rarely work, so call the council or a pest controller. Hot washing, sealing things in bags and vacuuming help in the meantime, but they will not clear an infestation.

How quickly can someone come out?

We name a firm within one working day. Most Sheffield firms then inspect within a few days, sometimes the same week. Mark the job as urgent on the form if someone is being bitten every night.

How long does treatment take?

Heat is usually done in one day. Spray takes two or three visits about a fortnight apart, so allow three to six weeks before you can be confident it has gone.

Will people know I have bed bugs?

Only if you tell them. Many firms will come in an unmarked van if you ask, and having bed bugs says nothing about how clean your home is.

Which parts of Sheffield do you cover?

The whole city, S1 to S36: from Hillsborough and Stannington to Mosborough and Beighton, Chapeltown down to Totley. We do not cover other towns.
